Veruschka was born Vera Gottliebe Anna Grafin von Lehndorff-Steinort on May 14th 1939 in Prussia.
In 1961, she moved to New York and for a time nothing happened. So Vera became Veruschka. In 1964, the editor of American Vogue began booking her.
Veruschka quickly started iconizing the ’60s. Lucky for her, Veruschka’s look was versatile enough to walk on the bohemian side too.
She’s returned to the fashion world every now and then in the past three decades. The most recent was taking to the runway last month at age 71. Being very much the model we love, she came back with opinions.
Of the show, she commented, “I didn’t like the makeup in the show, and didn’t think much of the dress. In the Sixties, fashion was about liberation. It was about setting women free; it wasn’t about being unable to walk.”
